One highlight in the eventful jubilee year to mark the 250th anniversary of Caspar David Friedrich’s birth is the major exhibition “Caspar David Friedrich: Where it all started” organised by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD, Dresden State Art Collections), which opened on 24 August 2024 at the Albertinum and Kupferstich-Kabinett (Museum of Prints, Drawings and Photographs). Dresden, “where it all started”, was home to the painter and draughtsman for more than 40 years and it was here that he turned into perhaps the most prominent artist of the German Romantic era. Here he contemplated landscapes by the Old Masters, took part in contemporary debates about art and sought inspiration from nature during his long walks around the city and further afield.
