In November 2026, the Sumida Hokusai Museum celebrates its tenth anniversary. Since opening in 2016 in Katsushika Hokusai’s birth area, our museum has introduced a great range of works by Hokusai and his students through exhibitions with diverse themes, sharing their fascination with a broad audience.
To celebrate our tenth anniversary, we are pleased to present See the SUMIDA HOKUSAI MUSEUM’s Best—The Scenery on Both Banks of the Sumida River Picture Scroll and Other Masterpieces―. This special exhibition showcases not only works that have been featured in past exhibitions, but also newly acquired pieces and works never displayed to the public. Each masterpiece has been carefully selected from our collection by our curators, reflecting their individual perspectives and expertise. In addition, each curator introduces one of their personal favorites with a brief comment, offering visitors a unique insight into the collection. We hope you will enjoy discovering the many charms of Hokusai and his students, while making new discoveries of your own.

The exhibition will include rare works from the Museum collection; among them a pillar print not known to exist in any other collection and works bearing the unusual signature 'K？gaku Hokusai'. From brush-drawn paintings and nishiki-e prints to surimono and block printed books, the exhibition presents an exceptional selection of masterpieces from the Museum's collection.
